Democratic leadership

The democratic style of leadership is also referred to as the participative style. In this approach, employees are encouraged to take part in organizational decision-making. Employees are given a lot of significance and are consulted on different organizational matters. In addition, they are kept informed about all the things taking place within an organization that concern them.

There is open communication in the democratic leadership style, which allows the employees to directly communicate with all members of the organization. In such organizations, employees are free to communicate their ideas and and put forward their suggestions. However, the ultimate decision is taken by the leaders.

The democratic leadership style enables employees to establish goals, assess their own performance, and exhibit growth on the job. In addition, it motivates them to perform better as they feel that they are a very important part of the organization. This style is most appropriate for employees that are highly educated and experienced.

Differences between autocratic and democratic leadership styles

In autocratic leadership, leaders have full authority and control over decision-making, and employees are not consulted at all on important organizational matters. On the other hand, the democratic leadership style is participative in nature as it allows employees to be involved in the decision-making process. 2. Decision-making

Autocratic leadership is most appropriate in organizations that have employees with low levels of education and experience, but who show submissiveness to their employers. On the other hand, democratic leadership should be used in organizations that have skilled, well-educated and experienced employees. In times of economic turmoil, autocratic leadership styles are adopted to a large extent as leaders want to encounter least resistance in their operations, which would lead to short-term outcomes and profits for the organization.

Top-down, command-and-control situations are generated by autocratic leaders. On the other hand, collaborative, employee-focused settings are created by democratic leaders to facilitate their style of leadership. There needs to be a balance among these two approaches if organizations wish to sustain profits as well as retain employees.
